Determination of key progress indicators for construction projects: The contractor's perspective - Vol. XXXVI Issue 1 - Pune NICMAR 2021 - 21-32p.
In the present era, the construction industry is dynamic, especially in developing countries like India, where the lack of contractor's opinion at the planning stage often results in surplus resources causing time and cost overruns. It highlights the need of an effective performance evaluation system to ensure an efficient utilization of the available resources with essential safety measures. Such a system should incorporate the contractor's perspective which is based on their experiences from different sites to adhere to the best construction practices and correct (or eliminate, if necessary) the misconducts. For this purpose, the identification of critical parameters affecting the overall construction process is inevitable. This research performs a literature review and utilizes expert's opinions from the contractor's perspective to identify five Key Progress Indicators (KPI). These five indicators are Physical Progress Rating (PPR), Safety Performance Rating (SPR), Quality Performance Rating (QPR), Construction Methods and Planning Rating (CMPR), and Project Social Rating (PSR). After that, this study estimates the weightage of these KPIs using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) approach. For this purpose, this study develops a rigorous questionnaire to gather critical information from experts from the construction industry in India. This information provides input to the AHP approach for the determination of KPIs. The overall AHP analysis suggests SPR to be the most, while PPR and PSR to be the least important factors affecting the construction project performance.
