Stress concentration in composite cantilever plates—effect of stiffeners and remedy - Vol.103(2), June - New York Springer 2022 - 627-638p.

The present study examines a composite cantilever beam containing a plate with two parallel sides stiffened symmetrically. A simplified procedure is used to analyze the flexural behavior of the beam. A numerical example illustrates the simplicity and accuracy of the methodology. When the edges of the cantilever plate are stiffened, the stress concentration is increased. The centerline stresses of the plate at the fixed end are considerably higher. A low aspect ratio (l/w) and a low G/E ratio significantly influence stress concentration. The present study demonstrates that stiffeners with high flexural rigidity could significantly reduce stress concentration along cantilever plate centerlines, allowing them to achieve similar results to those predicted by simple bending theory (SBT). Comparison and verification of the proposed simplified methodology are conducted using existing literature and finite element analysis. The theoretical results are in good agreement with those obtained by the literature and finite element analysis.
