Textiles In Motion: Histories Of Trade And Influences - Vol.73(4), Jun-Sep - Mumbai Marg Publications 2022 - 14-34p.

Marg has been central to a new project after Indian independence: giving textiles from South Asia a rich and expansive history of their own. Two key themes—mobility and intersections—have dominated the scholarship which has appeared in the magazine over the past 75 years. Prof. Abigail McGowan, guest editor of this volume, traces the work of leading scholars of the early era, such as John Irwin and Krishna Riboud, while also discussing more recent, innovative approaches to studying textiles. One of the crucial interventions in writing the histories of textiles has been to highlight stories of creative intersection and mutual influence in design. In these works, scholars trace the movement of motifs, patterns, skills and artisans across media and from one region to another, both within the subcontinent and much farther afield.
