Development of uncoupled and coupled approaches to analysing the response of foundations resting over partially saturated soil: mathematical development and comparisons - Vol.53(3), Jun - USA Springer 2023 - 634-643p.

Computer codes are developed to analyse the consolidation settlement of shallow foundations over partially saturated soils. These codes are developed by coupling the analytical solutions obtained using uncoupled and coupled approaches, with finite element method. Accuracy and computational efficiency of developed codes are demonstrated for a boundary value problem of strip footing resting over partially saturated soil. In the present study, detailed comparative analysis is performed to compare the accuracy of two approaches i.e., uncoupled and coupled, while estimating the pore water pressure development, footing settlements and Mandel–Crayer’s effect in soil consolidation. A detailed parametric study is presented later to evaluate the effect of initial degree of saturation and depth of water table on the consolidation settlement of shallow foundation. Results indicate that coupled approach is more practical for evaluating the response of partially saturated soil because of inability of uncoupled approach to account for the progressive stiffness degradation resulted by increase in pore water pressures in the soil.
