Load–settlement behavior of coconut midrib strip geogrid reinforced granular soil - Vol.53(5), Oct - USA Springer 2023 - 1175-1191p.

The use of natural fibers for soil reinforcement has been popular for over 5000 years. In this study, Coconut midrib fiber extracted from fallen coconut leaves was utilized as a reinforcing material to examine its suitability as a new sustainable product. A series of large-scale plate load tests were conducted to evaluate the bearing capacity of the reinforced soil. The tests were performed on soil compacted at two different relative densities. The results showed that parameters such as relative density of sand, distance from the footing base to the first layer of reinforcement, distance between consecutive layers of reinforcement, and the number of reinforcement layers are important factors that affect the bearing capacity improvement factor of reinforced soil. To understand the surface roughness, SEM and FTIR analyses were conducted. Numerical analysis was performed to validate the experimental results.
