Compact conformal UWB antenna design with enhanced gain characteristics using double-negative (DNG) metamaterial structure for biomedical applications - Vol.104(6), Dec - USA Springer 2023 - 1273-1283p.

This article shows simulation and design of metamaterial inspired flexible elliptical antenna structure for various biomedical applications. The work is carried out in two steps. Initially, the UWB patch antenna is designed. Next, designed antenna gain is increased by combining it to metamaterial surface exhibiting DNG characteristics. The basic antenna structure comprises a modified elliptical patch radiator, co-planar waveguide feed, 15.2 GHz impedance bandwidth and a 4.8-dB maximum gain. To enhance the antenna gain, a metamaterial superstrate having a array of 4 × 4 of DNG metamaterial is developed. Both the elliptical antenna (50 mm × 40 mm) along with the unit cell (12 mm × 12 mm) are designed using FR-4 with 0.25 mm thickness and permittivity of 4.4. The final metamaterial-integrated structure having complete dimension of 50 mm × 48 mm, 16 GHz of total bandwidth and 8 dB of maximum gain. Antenna provides satisfactory outcomes with reference to its impedance bandwidth and gain and is also a promising candidate for various indoor, biomedical and ultra-wide band applications.
