Indian standard code of practice IS-456 for the design of plain and reinforced concrete was revised in the year 2000 to incorporate durability criteria in the design. As a result of it many codal provisions have been changed. Hence there is need to train engineering students in designing reinforced cement concrete structures as per the latest code of IS-456. With his experience of more than 40 years in teaching, the author has tried to bring out students and teachers friendly book on the design of R.C.C. structures as per IS-456: 2000.

R.C.C. design is a vast subject. It is normally taught in two to three courses for civil engineering students. This book is for the first course in R.C.C. Design and author is writing another book `Advance R.C.C. Design` to meet the requirement of further courses. This book deals with design philosophy and design of various structural components of building. The design procedure is clearly explained and illustrated with several examples by presenting the solutions step by step in details and with neat sketches showing reinforcement details.

In continuation of the book ‘Design of RCC Structural Elements (RCC Volume-I)’, the author has brought out this book to explain and illustrate design of several RCC structures, which normally a civil engineer is often called to design and execute. This book brought out first in the year 2006, has been revised and enlarged and earlier mistakes in print and calculations have been corrected. The design procedure as per IS-456:2000 with latest revisions is explained and illustrated. After each design reinforcement details are provided.

Review which appeared in Technorama March 27, 2008:
The book deals with the design philosophy and design of various plain and reinforced structures concrete as per IS-456.The major incorporation regarding rapid developments in concrete. Technology as per IS-456:2000 also has been mentioned in the book which mainly include durability requirements of concrete. Minimum grade of mix has been specified as M-20 as against earlier specification of M-15.The comprehensive text integrates and unifies various concepts starting from introduction, principles of limit state design, flexural strength of RC sections in shear. The book also covers exclusively the limits states of serviceability, design of different beams, slabs, concluded with design of stairs. Attempt has been made to make the book, students friendly by solving problems step-by-step in details and also by providing details of reinforcement.
