Summary, etc. Every citizen has a fundamental right to move liberally throughout the country. Today, this right is violated in most cities, as pedestrian movement has become difficult in most of the Indian cities. Pedestrians are losing hold on roads and on-street parking often takes precedence over pedestrian amenities like paved sidewalks. The aim of the paper is to revive the concept of walking as an alternative transport mode for short trips, rebalancing mobility in urban areas and address the urgent need of formulation of strategies for people to reclaim the urban environment which is at the moment, overrun by motor vehicles. The literature study includes basic road definitions, road safety and some of the best practices followed in Indian cities. The case study of Greater Noida is done which includes study of existing footpaths, zebra crossings and intersections of the undertaken area. A survey is also conducted to analyze the present walkability in the considered zone and to identify the problems faced by the pedestrians. Conclusions are drawn based on the literature and case study
