Management of power in the pulsed load applications has become a significant issue when it comes to the battery backup systems. For the pulsed load applications, deep discharge of the battery and battery health problems are very well known. In this paper, an attempt is made to overcome these key challenges by connecting a high power density device, ultracapacitor (super capacitor) in parallel with the battery. The role of ultracapacitor is to supply temporal power required by the pulsed loads and the battery supplies steady state required power. A test bench is created considering 28 V, 6 Ah battery along with 24 V, 1000 F super capacitor. The load is in the form of rheostat bank having negligible inductance. The DC bus voltage at the point of common coupling was maintained at 42 V. The complete test set was simulated for three different time sets, i.e. for 20 seconds, 60 seconds and 120 seconds in MATLAB/Simulink® software. The results show the battery failure for 60 and 120 seconds, if it is connected alone to supply the burst power. But, when the same simulations were carried out using the parallel combination of the battery-ultra capacitor, the battery health was prevented by a considerable margin. |
