Age-old structures or spaces labelled as ‘heritage’ are considered as a sign of the glory and pride of a nation. There often exist structures that could not pass the merits as a graded heritage of local, national, or international importance but possess historic significance as well as social and emotional value to the people. With the passage of time and rapid growth in urban areas, the necessity for more land becomes obvious for the expansion of activities. Thus the non-graded age-old structures, sometimes without any use, become the target for demolition or alteration instead of conservation. Due to the absence of any suitable guideline, local authority often decides for demolishing such structures superseding their emotional and historic significance which becomes a loss for society. In this article, the authors have selected an age-old institutional campus with significant numbers of old buildings having historic significance and emotional values although the pressure for rapid expansion can’t be ignored. The authors have tried to develop a user-friendly framework using Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) tools, especially applying TOPSIS and WASPAS for evaluating and ranking the selected buildings that add to the grandiosity and emotional sentiments. Presently the campus is facing a space crunch for new construction to tackle the increased population and activities. It is assumed that the evaluation and ranking would serve as a guiding tool for undertaking interventions. |
