Summary, etc. Underground construction in a busy urban setting has always been a daunting task. Space constraints, noise level restrictions, working time restrictions, movement restrictions, utility identification and relocation, proximity to sensitive structures, and clearing old establishments with minimum disturbance are just a few of the challenges that one faces when working inside a large city. With the underground Metro being constructed in most of the larger cities in India, civil contractors have to constantly deal with such situations. The use of newer technologies in underground construction to deal more effectively with geotechnical challenges can save time, project costs and may even help us cater to the typical demands of urban construction. To demonstrate the usefulness of such technologies, one successful case study is presented in this paper. The case study is about rock-socketed secant piles, which were used for the construction of underground metro stations in Mumbai. The case study is expected to provide confidence to the industry for the adoption of such new technologies in future.
