Summary, etc. In today's world very rarely an element has the power to modify the character of space
into a place. Public Art is one such element which not only enriches a place but also
gives it meaning. Around the globe, countries have readily understood its importance
and accepted Public Art as an integral part of city development. In India, however, art
in this aspect is still overlooked and treated as an accessory. Urban aesthetics are still
substantially limited to the installation of deities, political figures, etc. The paper
discusses various possibilities and opportunities on how Public Art can boost a society; it
also suggests a framework which can be incorporated in the legal system of the country
to make it a part of the city development process.
