PRODUCTION OF CONTINIOUS CASTINGS IN FOUNDRIES

By: Vijayaram, T. R.
Publisher: New Delhi Journals Pub 2019Edition: Vol. 5 (2).Description: 24-29.Subject(s): Mechanical EngineeringOnline resources: Click Here In: International journal of production engineeringSummary: In continuous casting technique, metal or alloy is melted in a melting furnace and transferred in a pouring vessel called as tundish. Liquid metal pouring is done through ceramic piping, and the tundish is covered to prevent oxidation of the molten liquid metal. From the tundish, it is transferred and released into a metallic mould. With the aid of water cooling system, liquid molten metal solidifies, which surrounds the mould. The finished solidified cast metal or alloy comes out from the end of the mould. Cutting torches can be used to cut the metal off at the desired set lengths. Continuous casting is otherwise called as strand casting process, which can be highly automated and has a strong possibility to reduce the production cost significantly. It is a significant development in the metal casting field and most of the foundries are rapidly converting their manufacturing facilities to this type of production operation. It helps to produce higher quality cast steel products of different shapes at a reduced cost. Scrap metal is melted in electric furnaces, cast continuously and rolled directly into specific lines of products This review paper explains the working principle of the continuous casting process, features of horizontal continuous casting plant, heat transfer aspects, and various types of continuous cast products.
