MargSummary: It is not easy to imagine a unified entity called the urban soundscape and describe it accurately. A common approach would be to think of it as the collective sound generated from the infrastructure being built and used on a daily basis. Traffic, industrial noises, domestic movements, and common utilities related to wind, water and electricity bind the city together in a mass of sonic information. Investigating this concept as well as the idea of “sonic effect”, the article draws on the works of artists and scholars like John Cage, R. Murray Schafer, Jean-Francois Augoyard and Henry Torgue. Looking at modern Indian cities like Amravati, the writer also discusses how future cities should keep in mind architecture and planning that are in tune with sustainable eco-friendly sound design.
