Overtaking Distance Models for Passenger Cars in Two-Lane Undivided Rural Highways

This study aims to develop empirical overtaking distance (OD) models for fast-moving passenger cars (FmPC) overtaking three wheelers (TW), slow-moving passenger cars (SmPC), light commercial vehicles (LCV) and heavy vehicles (HV). The required field data were collected using instrumented FmPC equipped with GPS tracker and three cameras along NH-61, India. The OD, average speed of overtaken vehicle (VBavg), speed of FmPC before and after the overtaking maneuver (VAstart and VAend), maximum speed of FmPC (VAmax) and longitudinal gaps between vehicles at the start and end (Xs and Xe) of overtaking maneuver were used for model development. Preliminary analyses revealed that the total longitudinal gap (Xs+Xe) and VAend−VBavg for FmPC and overtaken vehicle combinations had low standard deviations with mean values of about 18.0 m and 15.5 kmph, respectively. Five empirical models were developed to estimate the distance to overtake TW, SmPC, LCV, HV and all vehicle types. Results from the models showed that the OD for HV was the longest and TW the shortest.
