This research proposes an effective controller based on the Sliding Mode (SM) concept for a standalone solar power system. The power produced by PV systems varies continuously due to the unpredictability of variations in solar radiation strength and ambient temperature. With the support of sliding mode controllers, we propose a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm to obtain peak power from photovoltaic (PV) modules. Even the ordinary PID controller and the Fractional-Order PID (FOPID) controllers maintain constant DC bus voltage, better transient performance is given by SM controllers. The effectiveness of the SM controller is measured using different time-domain parameters such as the percentage overshoot, rise time and settling time. Under the conditions of varying irradiance and temperature, the relevant analysis are performed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment.
