Although the recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) is promoted globally, its use in structural applications is restricted because of its inferior durability owing to the porous and weak residual mortar adhered to recycled aggregate particles. The accelerated carbonation treatment has a potential to modify the pore structure of recycled aggregates. In this regard, the present study has been carried out to understand the effect of accelerated carbonation treatment on the properties of RAC. Mechanical, durability and nondestructive properties of natural aggregate concrete (NAC), RAC and carbonated recycled aggregate concrete (CRAC) were investigated and the results were compared to each other. A total of three mixes with 100% NAC, 100% RAC and 100% CRAC were studied. The results of this investigation reveal that all the properties of RAC were appreciably inferior to that of NAC. However, the accelerated carbonation treatment of recycled aggregates and their subsequent use in concrete enhanced all the aforementioned properties significantly.
