Potential of Pumped Hydro Storage as an Electrical Energy Storage in India

Application of some electrical energy storage (EES) devices can control this problem. Pumped hydroelectricity storage (PHS), electro-chemical batteries, compressed air energy storage, flywheel, etc. are such EES. Considering the technical maturity level, storage time, capital cost, life cycle, potential etc., in India, PHS is found to be the best possible option with no additional fuel needs. In India, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has identified 63 sites where 96,524 MW PHS can be installed but at present 9 PHS with a total installed capacity of 4785.6 MW are in operation and 1205 MW is under construction [February 2021, CEA]. Therefore, India has wide scope to enhance its hydropower generation along with PHS. Generally, the lifespan of a PHS project is at least 50 years and these hydro projects help in reducing carbon footprint of Indian power sector as well as conserving scarce fossil fuels. So, in this paper, all the technical views related to PHS are discussed along with total PHS scenario of India as well as the constraints and policies are summarized.
