As we celebrate our 75th year of Independence and glance
over our shoulders, with an eye on the future, it would be
in the fitness of things to also look back at the journey of
Indian architecture, the architecture of any era is always a
reflection of its socio-political ground realities, and have a
vision for the way forward.
Indian Architecture- A blotting paper?
Indian architecture being a rich tapestry of varied and
often contrasting styles and expressions indeed presents a
challenge for an architect to be able to define it. Perhaps the
best possible explanation comes from Charles Correa who
compared Indian architecture to a blotting paper which
absorbs all the different influences received by it through the
different ages, not very different from Indian society. Since
we are celebrating 75 years of Independence from British
rule, it would be appropriate to start the journey from the
British Raj era.
