Impact of governing factors on prediction of tunneling induced surface settlement in young alluvium deposit

In general, the major concern of tunnel construction in urban areas is the maximum surface settlement developed and the studies on the response of tunneling induced settlement on young alluvium deposit are very rare. This study captures the impact of vital factors like grout pressure, face pressure, C/D ratio, tunnel diameter and elastic modulus of soil using a numerical approach that governs the maximum surface settlement. Evaluation of governing parameters, particularly for young alluvial soil will be handy in understanding the impact of each parameter and lead in formulating new or modify existing relationships suitable for predicting maximum surface settlement. For the numerical approach, a model was developed with the PLAXIS three-dimensional finite element software and validated with field data. The findings are also compared with analytical and empirical approaches developed by different researchers.
