Extreme event simulation to ascertain cyclonic condition in the vicinity of a major port

An integrated mathematical model is set-up considering a hypothetical cyclone track having very severe intensity using MIKE software. Wind data file is generated with the help of MIKE and relevant data available at CWPRS and in other public domain have been made use of in the set-up of depth-averaged two-dimensional model. So as to reproduce cyclonic conditions, sufficiently large model domain is considered along with ‘wind forcing’ by imposing pertinent ‘tide’ and ‘wave’ conditions. Peak freshet is introduced to reproduce land-side cyclonic run-off from streams to resolve comprehensive flow dynamics within the harbour basin. Resolved flow dynamics during hypothetical cyclone period are described in this paper. This study is found useful in identifying the vulnerable areas in the harbour basins and to ascertain the wave hydrodynamics near adjacent northern coast line during the occurrence of such extreme event. Information derived from the model simulation is useful for port operations and to address morphological issues. Inferences derived would help to evolve possible remedial measures/contingency plans to mitigate the damages.
