dramatic development in the communication system and sudden acquisition of Internet has changed the life style. Elastic optical networks have been introduced to deal with the issues related to network capacity and challenges. Both software and hardware resource optimization have been considered as the prime enablers of elastic optical networks (EONs). Elastic optical networks aim to provide better spectral efficiency over a long haul data transmission line at several Tb/s rate. There are significant mordenisation going on the optical networks due to increase in network traffic. To resolve these issues, EONs aim to provide better spectral efficiency, scalability and flexibility. Elastic optical network is moving forward to adopt and implement gridless optical networks. Since last few years, there have been a significant transformation taking place from fixed grid networks to flex-grid and gridless networks. This review paper discusses the concepts of fixed grid networks, flex-grid networks, gridless networks, Bandwidth aggregation, preferred modulation techniques, research and their associated challenges.
