Feasibility study on biocomposite as a self-healer of cracks

This work is an attempt to study and analyze the behavioral properties at the microstructural and biochemical levels of self-healing ingredients/materials intended to be used. Based on pre-hand studies, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus megaterium, and Lysinibacillus sphaericus encapsulated in clay pellets are selected as the self-healing microorganisms and calcium lactate as a precursor. The strength test, healing observations by microstructural analysis, and biochemical analysis prove that the selected bacterial species reveals calcite precipitation. Calcium lactate compound was also compatible to achieve the expected strength, with which Bacillus sphaericus exhibits elevated performance in the majority of the tests among the bacteria tested. The main focus of the study is on the micro-level healing mediated by the bacteria. Hence, the research work is a satisfactory approach to develop a self-healing/bio-concrete that could contribute to sustainable construction.
