According to UN-HABITAT by 2050, 66 per cent of the world’s population will live in cities that is 7 out of every 10 people will live in an urban area. Rapid urbanization and inadequate capability to cope with the housing needs of people in urban areas have contributed too many socio-economic and environmental issues, which amongst others have subsequently resulted in land use changes and have led to the formation of informal settlements in urban areas. Banganga, one of the dense informal settlements in the western part of Bhopal city with close proximity to the market area called New Market as a central business district. Due to its unique social, cultural and self-sustaining features, it is important to study the settlement.
