Instead of promoting impressive cultural projects with generous budgets, the judges of last year’s Mies van der Rohe Award decided to shine a light on unpretentious but innovative proposals seeking to provide destitute populations with the possibility of a dignifying home. NL Architects and XVW architectuur’s daring refurbishment of DeFlat Kleiburg (AR July/Aug 2017) won the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, while MSA’s Navez social housing in northern Brussels was awarded the Emerging Architect Special Mention – the first time, since the creation of the prize in 1988, that the work of a Belgian practice had been recognised.
