Integrating Artisanal Elements - Vol.36(5), May - New Delhi Burda Media India Private Limited 2019 - 74-79p.

The project is the refurbishment of a beach resort and spa in Kokkini Hani, Crete. The resort is located on the sun-drenched Cretan coastline. Inspired by Greece’s infinite blue sea and sky, the design unfolds a high-end collection of artisanal elements, revealing handwork Greek traditions.

The design study was divided into two phases. The first phase focussed on the outdoor restaurant and pool area. The second phase of the intervention focused on the front of the house areas of the hotel and more specifically the beach, the main outdoor areas and the café.

Wooden pergolas, dividers and cabanas are created by untreated chestnut trunks, originated from Mount Athos, highlighting the authenticity and roughness of the Mediterranean earth. Dividers made by Greek artisans, combine local wicker and cotton ropes, punctuate elegantly the simplicity of natural materials.

The goal of the architects was to elevate the hotel to an area of high aesthetics and hospitality. The design is kept simple and is highlighted by Greek elements that dictate the functionality of the spaces. The game of light with shadow, the unobstructed view of the landscape and the natural materials are the key elements of the design. The shadows created by the wicker pergola, highlight the textures and create an ever-changing environment.
