<br/><br/> Chandigarh, the city beautiful, was designed to be unfettered from<br/>traditions of its past; at present Chandigarh is the city with the<br/>highest density of vehicles in the country and is facing challenges<br/>like the degraded quality of open spaces at the neighborhood level,<br/>car dominance in the residential area leading to encroachment<br/>of green spaces, increased traffic and pollution. As a result, the<br/>users, especially children are deprived of safe and easy access to<br/>green spaces and lack opportunities for independent play and<br/>mobility. The aim is to understand the needs and challenges of<br/>urban childhood. Sector 22, the model neighborhood was selected<br/>for the case study and the results of the analysis are discussed. It is<br/>concluded that to maintain the beauty and spirit of one of the best<br/>experiments of urban planning and architecture of modern and<br/>independent India, its users should be prioritized during various<br/>stages of development.
