Statistical switching overvoltages of 1200 kV UHV AC transmission line - Vol.103(1), Feb - New York Springer 2022 - 189-195p.

To transport large power over long distances to meet higher demands requires UHV AC transmission systems. In the insulation design of UHV AC power transmission systems, it is important to know the magnitude of switching overvoltages that may occur. The need to withstand the switching surges can affect the cost of a transmission system, and hence, an estimate of the switching overvoltages under various conditions of operation is important. In this paper, the magnitude of switching overvoltages generated on the world’s first 1200 kV UHV AC transmission line is estimated due to line energization, line re-energization, single-line-to-ground fault initiation and fault clearing switching operations by varying different parameters. Statistical analysis is performed on these overvoltages to obtain characteristic parameters of statistical distribution of the overvoltages. The switching operations are simulated using a digital programme like PSCAD/EMTDC.
