Particle packing approach for proportioning recycled aggregate from building demolition waste (BDW)—A sustainable solution - Vol.104(1), Mar - USA Springer 2023 - 207-222p

Use of recycled concrete aggregate in construction industry has brought a revolutionary change in enhancing sustainability, improving economy, implementing waste management rules, conserving non-renewable energy resources. The present work gives an insight into proportioning the recycled concrete aggregates from building demolition waste to attain maximum packing density. This study utilizes particle packing methods to increase the packing density and decrease void ratio of aggregate in the volume of concrete. This resulted in decrease in volume of cement paste in concrete, ensuring sustainability in concrete. Modified Toufar model (MTM) and J D Dewar Model (JDD), the ternary models and compressible packing model (CPM), which is a multi-component model are used for the determination of packing density of recycled concrete aggregate. The proportions of constituents of concrete are further determined based on the mix design procedures according to IS code of practice and particle packing method, yielding maximum packing density. The packing density of aggregate increased by 3.75%, 13.6% and 18.4% for natural aggregate and 14.86%, 19.5% and 27.7% for recycled concrete aggregate using the proportions obtained from MTM, JDD and CPM methods, respectively, as compared to that using conventional IS 383:2016 stipulations. Further, the Binder Intensity Index is found to be lower for the mixes designed based on particle packing methods. The use of particle packing methods can be an important step for effective gradation, designing recycled aggregate concretes and thus utilization of recycled concrete aggregates in construction sector from a sustainability perspective.
