<br/><br/> Hydrophobic ion-pairing (HIP) complexation technique has been displayed to modify the physicochemical properties, solubility, oral absorption, bioavailability, and the lipophilicity of an ionic drug in the lipid phase. This could affect a higher permeation through biological membranes. HIP complexation was considered through the formation of a neutral molecule by electrostatic interaction of ionizable groups of drugs with oppositely charged functional groups of a complex-forming agent. Subsequently, this ion-pair may encapsulate into many delivery systems. The objective of this manuscript was to study the effectiveness of ion-pair complextion and cover the update application of this strategy through several routes of administration such as ocular, oral, pulmonary, transdermal, and parenteral.
