520 _aPlatinum anode assisted oxidation of naphthalene and anthracene has been carried out at controlled potential for the investigation of a new ecofriendly synthetic method for the polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons using acetic acid and acetonitrile as solvent. The reaction is an example of anodic oxidative substitution and addition in polynuclear aromatics. Controlled potential electrolysis was carried out at platinum plates of dimensions 1.0 cm × 0.5 cm as working as well as counter electrode. Various parameters of the reaction with yield are reported here.
