520 _aA study was conducted to involve the engineering properties of the chilli pods and seeds to finalize the design parameters of the chilli seed extractor. The average length, width, thickness and sphericity of the chilli pod varied from 74.48–82.33 mm, 15.61–22.73 mm, 0.43–4.0 mm and 0.11–0.21 at 85–86%, 64–65% and 3–4% moisture content, respectively. In case of seeds, the values were 3.98–4.09 mm, 3.08–3.34 mm, 0.67–0.8 mm and 0.5–0.53. The mean test weight of chilli pods and seeds was recorded as 387.34 g and 8.38 g at 85–86%, 236.87 g and 6.58 g at 64–65% and 195.34 g and 4.90 g at 3–4%, respectively. The angle of repose of chilli fruit varied from 29.49–36.27 degree. The average bulk density was 156.3 kg m−3 for chilli pods and 453.7 kg m−3 for seeds. The cutting force simulated with Texture Analyser revealed that middle section requires maximum force of 165.52 N at 85–86%, bottom 153.76 N at 64–65% and top 190.0 N at 3–4% moisture content, respectively. The Chilli seed extractor comprised of main frame, feeding hopper, cutting section, reciprocating screen, power transmission system and collection tray. The evaluation of the chilli seed extractor revealed that the optimum conditions occurred at 3–4% moisture content, 1.5 cm blade spacing and 4 cm amplitude with an extraction efficiency of 76.21%, separation efficiency 96.83%, throughput capacity 16.22 kg h−1, mechanical seed damage 3.10%, and 3.80 min. kg−1 labour requirement. The chilli seed extractor can generate entrepreneurship opportunities for small and marginal farmers of hilly areas.
