Pedestrians crossing a road at mid block section reduce the traffic stream speed and thus the capacity of the road. These crossings may be at designated places where pedestrian markings are made or at undesignated places where no such markings are present. The pedestrians crossing an urban road at undesignated places are not uncommon and they force motor vehicles to provide suitable gaps for their crossing. The present study demonstrates the effect of such crossings on capacity of an urban arterial road. Data is collected on six sections of urban arterial roads in New Delhi, Jaipur and Chandigarh.
