Material science education: challenges and opportunities - Vol.17(2), May - Hyderabad IUP Publications 2024 - 46-58p.

Material science is an important interdisciplinary field that combines ideas from physics, chemistry and engineering to provide advancements in technology, healthcare and environmental sustainability. This paper explores the changing environment of educational tactics and teaching methods in the field. The primary obstacles encompass the incorporation of swiftly progressing knowledge into educational programs, tackling the scarcity of specialist instructors, and harmonizing theoretical instruction with practical and experiential learning. Moreover, the multidisciplinary character of material science necessitates the use of comprehensive teaching methods that encompass numerous traditional fields of study, often resulting in the need for substantial curriculum restructuring. This review analyzes existing educational techniques, showcases exemplary practices from prominent institutions, and investigates groundbreaking solutions designed to educate the upcoming generation of material scientists with the essential tools and knowledge to tackle global concerns. It highlights the urgent requirement for flexible and proactive strategies to promote strong talent pipelines in material science education.
