Summary, etc. Single- and double-side single-pass square butt submerged arc welding is carried out on 9Cr–1Mo–V steel plate using the same weld materials. Deep hole drilling and contour measurement were employed to determine welding-induced residual stresses. The subsequent changes in microstructure and mechanical properties are also investigated. These weld joints are simulated and analysed considering the element birth and death, double ellipsoidal Gaussian distributed heat source model, temperature-dependent material properties, phase transformation, etc. It was observed that single-side single-pass welding develops better transverse strength properties than double-side single-pass welding. A compressive longitudinal residual stress was observed in the fusion zone throughout the thickness of the single-pass weld. However, double-sided weld exhibited tensile residual stress in the mid-thickness region of the FZ, whereas the top and bottom regions in the fusion zone of the double-sided weld possess compressive residual stress.
