| Summary, etc. | Space medicine may be defined as: “The practice of all aspects of preventive medicine including screening, health-care delivery, and maintaining human performance in the extreme environment of space and preserving the long-term health of space travellers.”[1] President John F. Kennedy in 1961 committed the United States to land a man on the Moon and return him securely to the Earth. The effects of space-flight on human physiology were not very well known. The variations due to acceleration, cabin pressure, vibration, CO2 concentration, and micro-gravity were not very well known. Moreover, external threats such as radiation exposure, meteorites, and extreme temperatures were also to be taken into consideration.[2] |
