Mirroring the UGC's objective, this book endeavours to generate awareness about environmental concerns among students. The content has been developed so that students from all disciplines?from physics to philosophy?can comprehend it without difficulty. The book introduces the reader to the perils facing the environment and the importance of environmental resources for human sustenance. Beginning with an introduction to Environmental Studies, the book goes on to discuss environmental problems such as depleting natural resources and imbalanced ecosystems, environmental pollution and toxic waste disposal, disease control and disaster management, socio-environmental issues, and sustainable development. Besides explaining issues of environmental degradation and their impact on humans, the book covers the two major socio-ecological concerns?HIV/AIDS and sustainable development. Written in as easy-to-understand language, the book aims to lucidly convey the seriousness of environmental issues to students. Pedagogical elements such as learning objectives, end-of-chapter summary, and a large number of review questions and field work problems complete the utility of this book as a first-level text on environmental studies. |
