Hybrid desalination combining microbial cells and reverse osmosis

By: Contributor(s): Publication details: Prayagraj Pushpa Publishing House 2022Edition: Vol.26 AprilDescription: 179-196pSubject(s): Online resources: In: JP journal of heat and mass transferSummary: Abstract: With the increased awareness of the population to the protection of the environment, there is a growing interest in environmental pollution and the dangers of concentrated water discharged into coastal and offshore areas. Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination technology is widely used for production drinking water, but needs a high energy and results a high volume of brine discharge leading to a negative impact on the environment. Microbial Desalination Cell (MDC) technology has emerged in recent years as the most viable solution for wastewater treatment. The current production increased with the decreasing of methanogenic growth rates. The flow rate of saline water decreased, salt removal is more important. From initial 35g/l, the salt concentration decreased significantly to around 22g/l when the salt solution flow rate is equal to 0.01ml/min. The decrease in salt content by MDC promotes reverse osmosis desalination of seawater and allows us to obtain a lower salt concentration which improves the RO performance. Keywords and phrases: hybrid desalination, microbial desalination cell (MDC), reverse osmosis (RO), energy.
