In today’s rapidly evolving world, preserving cultural
heritage is increasingly challenging. UNESCO
defines cultural heritage as artefacts, monuments,
a group of buildings and sites, museums that have
a diversity of values including symbolic, historic,
artistic, aesthetic, ethnological or anthropological,
scientific and social significance. It includes tangible
heritage (movable, immobile and underwater),
intangible cultural heritage (ICH) embedded into
cultural and natural heritage artefacts, sites or
monuments, industrial heritage and cave paintings
(UNESCO, 2024). Cultural heritage is thus a precious
asset that portrays our legacy. It represents the
present, past and future ways of our lifestyle and
gives value to society and the community. Heritage,
thus becomes a ‘palimpsest’ that is defined by the
superimposition of new material on remaining
traces. New buildings, culture and technology are
fresh layers on the palimpsest.
