While ancient texts and archaeological discoveries point to temple worship of major deities, most of the gods revered in India’s villages and forest areas were not part of any ancient scriptures. That different gods have always been in worship is evident from the study of the changing form of sculptures on a temple. Antecedents for each part of the Hindu temple may be traced to earlier Buddhist structures, such as the exactingly executed rock-cut cave.
