Study on evaluation of warm mix asphalt using the admixture sasobit

By: Contributor(s): Publication details: Pune NICMAR 2024Edition: Vol.29(4), Oct-DecDescription: 23-32pSubject(s): Online resources: In: NICMAR Journal of construction managementSummary: With the expanding economic activities the structure of the atmosphere has started to rapidly change. The climate warming is also caused due to the increasing carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere. To reduce the emissions from CO2 gas liberated in the atmosphere, the Supreme Court in India has banned the use of Hot Mix Plants (HMP) in metropolitan cities like Delhi. In this context the Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology is very useful. In Europe and the United States, a number of similar technologies have been developed in recent years. The main objective of the WMA technology is reduction of asphalt binder viscosity within the limits of certain temperature. Thus, a lower viscosity allows the full coating of aggregates with bitumen at a lower temperature than needed for mixing the Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) mixtures. Thus, WMA mixes save money in the plant through reduced energy costs. The warm mixes allow construction of pavements in colder weather, because critical loss of temperature in the cold will be less, resulting in longer construction season extending into the winter. The present study was carried out in the laboratory to evaluate the suitability of the admixture Sasobit in WMA applications. The assessment of strength characteristics of WMA using Sasobit is presented in this study. Further, the optimum content of Sasobit in Warm Mix asphalt is determined. Also, an analysis is carried out on the effect of variation of mixing temperature on the properties of WMA.
